About this page
Printing helpPlan thirty minutes: a times table sheet as warm-up, one new-skill page such as Identifying Fractions or Rounding to the Nearest 10, then a puzzle. Learn one times table at a time with the 3 and 4 pages, then mix them up with Multiplication Flashcards. Send a word problem sheet for homework once a week. Use the printed answers to check, and let your child correct their own mistakes in a different color.
Third grade is where multiplication and division become the core. Children memorize facts, link them to equal groups, meet fractions as parts of a whole, and round to the nearest 10 and 100. The trouble spots are division, because it reverses multiplication, and two-step word problems. This collection follows Grade 2 and leads into the bigger multiplication and long division of Grade 4. Fractions are introduced as simple parts of a whole.
Learn the 3 and 4 tables before mixing them with other facts. Use the Multiplication Chart 1-10 beside a worksheet while facts are still shaky, then remove it. For puzzles, offer the Easy Sudoku or Medium Mazes. Graph paper with 1/2 inch squares suits lining up digits. Word searches work in Easy mode too, with words across and down only on a small grid.
- How should a child learn the times tables?
- One table at a time, in order of difficulty, with daily short practice. Start with the 3 and 4 pages here, use flashcards for speed, and keep a chart nearby until answers come without counting.
- Why does my third grader struggle with word problems?
- Usually the reading, not the math. Have the child underline the question and draw the situation before choosing an operation. Start with the one-step multiplication and division pages, then move on to the two-step ones.
- What are the 1/2 inch graph paper pages for?
- They give larger squares for lining up digits in multi-digit work, drawing arrays and sketching fractions. Younger students find them easier to write inside than standard small squares.
