Printing help

Print a page and begin with the doubling trick: double the number, then double again. Twelve problems fit in about five minutes, so they slot into a morning routine or a classroom warm-up. Ask the child to explain how they got one answer aloud. Check with the answer key together. For a small class, print five versions so neighbors work on the same table without sharing answers, and collect the sheets for a quick glance at who needs more time.

The fours table is two doubles, so a child who owns the twos already holds half of it. Skip counting by four works too, though it is slower. Patterns help: every product is even, and the ones digits repeat four, eight, two, six, zero. Children often get stuck between the sixth and ninth step. After fours, eights follow naturally, because eight is a double of four, and both feed later work on area.

Pick Stacked when the child is new to fours and In a row once they can answer without hesitating. Compact allows plenty of room for a few extra practice rounds. Missing number mode asks for a hidden factor, a good test of real understanding. If a child keeps stumbling, go back to the 2 times table for a couple of days, since the doubling method depends on it.

What is a quick trick for the 4 times table?
Double the number, then double the result. Four times seven is double seven, then double again. This works because four is two twos, and it gives children a method when memory fails.
Do the 4s help with other tables?
Yes. Eights are doubles of fours, and fours show up in measurement and area. Learning them well makes the eights much easier, and it gives the sixes and twelves a solid base too.
How do I know they have learned the 4s?
They answer in a couple of seconds, in any order, without counting. Give a fresh sheet after a few days and see if the speed holds, then move on to the next table.
