Rounding to the Nearest 100 Worksheets
Rounding to the nearest 100 worksheets use three and four-digit numbers where the tens digit decides the direction. A solid practice sheet for third and fourth graders, and handy review before estimating sums.
About this page
Printing helpGive it as a seatwork page right after teaching the hundreds number line, where students place the halfway point between two hundreds. About ten to fifteen minutes is typical. Afterward switch on the answer key and have kids fix mistakes with a colored pencil. If you printed the nearest 10 sheet earlier, have students compare both roundings of the same number to see how the answers differ.
The digit to look at is now the tens digit, which is easy to confuse with the ones digit from the previous skill. A tens digit of 5 or more sends the number up to the next hundred. The sticking points are numbers whose last two digits are 50 or more in the hundreds above, where rounding up can roll into a new thousand, and students who look at the wrong digit out of habit. This follows rounding to 10 and leads to rounding to 1,000.
The Round to control reads 100 on this page, and you can try 10 or 1,000 for differentiation. Choose 12 problems for students who need to talk each one through, 20 for regular practice, and 30 for a timed warm-up. A helpful scaffold for strugglers is to write the two nearest hundreds beside each number before choosing one.
- What do I do with a number ending in exactly 50?
- It sits exactly halfway between two hundreds, and halfway numbers always round up, so the number goes to the higher hundred. The answer key follows that convention, and it is worth stating out loud since the carry surprises many kids.
- Do students look at the ones digit too?
- No. Only the tens digit decides when rounding to hundreds. The ones digit is a distraction. Have them cover it with a finger and read the number as if it ended in the tens place.
- Why use the approximately sign in the answers?
- Rounded values are not equal to the original, only close to it. Writing the symbol teaches that distinction early and matches how estimates are written in later grades and on tests.
