Begin with the sound and a slow look at the model A before any pencil touches paper. Trace across the solid rows, move to dashed, finish dotted, and keep the blank lines for last. Fifteen minutes is the most a new cursive learner can hold steady. Lowercase a is the one to repeat, because it opens c, d, g and q later. Tack the finished sheet beside the desk as a reference.

The oval is everything in cursive A. The hand draws a small counterclockwise round, climbs to the right wall and comes straight down, and the same motion hides inside lowercase a, d, g and q. Kids leave the oval open so it reads like a u, or forget to retrace the right side. Letters before A do not exist, so this page is a fresh start. B follows, and its tall loop is a new challenge.

Medium is the right opening for a typical third grader. If the oval keeps coming out lopsided, switch Line size to Large so the curve has space, then step back down. Small is a goal for the end of the month. Flip Style to Print to show a child how the same letter looks without joins, which sometimes explains why the cursive shape is shaped like it is.

Is the cursive A the same shape as the print A?
No. Cursive capital A is built around a rounded oval instead of two slanted lines and a crossbar, which surprises many children. Lowercase a, however, is nearly the same round body they already write in print.
What is the best letter order for cursive?
Many programs group letters by stroke, but alphabetical order works fine at home. Starting with A, B and C keeps the pages easy to track, and you can jump to e, l, t whenever you want joins.
How many times should my child trace A before writing alone?
Follow the page: solid row, dashed row, dotted row, then blank lines. If the dotted row is still wobbly, print another sheet tomorrow instead of rushing to the blank lines.
