About this page

Printing help

Work in short blocks: one math sheet, one handwriting or reading sheet, and a puzzle as a finisher. Twenty minutes in total is plenty for most six year olds. Print the Addition and Subtraction pages for daily fact practice, and use the word problem pages once a child can read the sentences alone. Keep the printed answers for yourself and check together afterwards. A short weekly routine works better than a pile at the weekend.

First grade is where fact fluency begins. Children learn addition and subtraction within 20, read the clock to the hour, count coins and skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s. Alongside this they firm up letter formation across the whole alphabet and read their first sight word lists. The trouble spot is often subtraction and coin values. The step before is kindergarten, and the next is Grade 2.

Choose sheets that match what the child is learning now, then add one slightly harder item. Counting coins goes well with Skip Counting by 5s and 10s. For a child who finishes fast, offer the Easy Mazes or Animals Bingo Cards as a change. On any word search theme, pick Easy mode on any theme, where words run across and down only on a small grid.

What math should a first grader practice at home?
Addition and subtraction facts within 10, then 20, along with counting, telling time to the hour and coin values. Short daily sessions work better than a long weekly one. Word problems follow once reading is steady.
How do I use the handwriting sheets in first grade?
Use name and alphabet tracing for ten minutes, then let the child write a few words independently on the First Grade Handwriting Paper. Praise neat letters over fast ones, and stop before hands get tired.
Are the sight word pages the right level?
Dolch First Grade and the Fry First 100 are matched to early readers. If your child still hesitates on them, step back to the Dolch Primer list in the kindergarten collection.
