Division Word Problems

Eight stories take about twenty minutes. Ask the child to say whether the story is sharing or grouping, draw it, and then write the number sentence such as 24 ÷ 4. Compare to the key and check the sentence first, then look at the answer and its unit. A child who can describe the story in words is much more likely to pick division on a mixed page later.

Sharing and grouping give the same calculation with different questions. In sharing, the number of groups is known and the size is asked for; in grouping, the size is known and the number of groups is asked for. Children often find grouping harder. Because every division comes out even, nothing distracts from spotting the operation. Remainders in context are a different lesson. Facts from the times tables carry the work, so weak tables make this page slow.

Times tables is the default and suits third grade. Small groups gives divisors up to 5 for beginners, and Two-digit pushes toward larger quotients, which means a written division method is expected. Eight stories is a good set. Use six if each takes a long time. If a child stalls, turn it into multiplication: what times 4 makes 24?

Why do the answers never have remainders?

The aim is to spot division in a story. Leftovers in context, such as how many boxes are needed when some remain, are a separate lesson, and long division pages cover that arithmetic.

What is the difference between sharing and grouping?

Sharing splits a total into a known number of groups and asks how many in each. Grouping has a known group size and asks how many groups. Both are written the same way.

My child cannot recall the facts. Where to start?
