Ten Frame Worksheets

Use it as a five minute warm-up at the start of math, or as a sit-down sheet with twelve frames. Ask the child to answer without counting every dot first: a full top row is five, so six is five and one. Flash a frame, ask for the number, then check the page against the key. Do the sheet again with a new version a few days later and see which numbers come faster.

A ten frame is a picture of how numbers 1 to 10 are built from five and ten. Children who count dots one at a time are working at the lowest level. Children who say seven because the top row is full and two are on the bottom have seen the structure. That structure is what later makes addition facts, making ten, and subtracting from ten feel natural. The 5 to 20 option shows two frames side by side for the teens.

Begin with 1 to 10 and try 5 to 20 only when the child reads a single frame quickly. The second setting adds a second frame, so a teen number appears as one full frame plus extra dots. Six problems makes a short oral drill; twelve is a full sheet. For a variation, print with the answer key off and have the child draw dots to match numbers you call out.

Why does the filling order matter?

Dots go in the top row left to right, then the bottom row. A full top row reads as five instantly, and a full frame as ten, so the child learns to rely on the pattern.

My child still counts every dot. Is that a problem?

Not at first. Counting is how they learn the numbers. To move them along, cover the frame for a second and ask how many, or ask how many more it needs to make ten.

Can my child fill in blank frames from a number I say?

Yes. Print without the answer key, call a number, and have them draw dots in order. It reverses the task and shows whether they have the five and ten structure.
