Grade 2 Worksheets

Plan a half-hour block: one math sheet, one reading or writing sheet and a puzzle to finish. Use the 2-Digit Addition and Subtraction pages for the main drill and the word problem pages when reading is comfortable. Telling time and money are best done in small doses, a few minutes at a time, and tied to real objects such as a clock or a pile of coins. Check with the printed answers afterwards rather than during the work.

Second grade stretches number sense from single digits into the hundreds. Children learn to regroup, meaning carrying and borrowing, to read place value and to compare numbers. They read clocks to five minutes, add coins and bills, and begin cursive letters. Regrouping is the usual stumbling block, so give it extra time. This collection follows Grade 1 and prepares for the multiplication focus of Grade 3.

Do not rush into regrouping before the child is sure of facts to 20. Pair Skip Counting with Telling Time to Five Minutes, since counting by 5s is the clock skill. Why does second grade include cursive?

Some schools introduce cursive here, others later. Cursive Letter A Practice lets a child try the first letter at home. If your school starts later, treat it as optional and come back when they are ready.
