About this page
Printing helpUse it as a ten-minute opener before the main lesson, or as a short homework sheet a few times a week. Stacked layout lines up the tens and ones, which matters once sums reach 100. Mark with the answer key, then have the child redo only the wrong ones in a different color. Press New version each time so the practice never repeats. For a mixed-ability class, hand out different problem counts using the 12, 20 or 30 options.
Adding within 100 combines place value with fact fluency. Children need to add ones, notice when they make a new ten, and carry it into the tens column. Many errors come from forgetting the carried ten or misaligning columns. Grade 2 addition to 20 comes first, and 3-digit addition follows. Mental strategies such as adding tens first are also worth teaching here. Knowing that ten more changes only the tens digit saves time.
If a child is still shaky, drop to 12 problems and use Stacked. For confident students, 30 problems in the Compact layout gives a quick fluency check. Missing number mode, where one addend is hidden, makes children think about the relationship between the numbers. Work through a few carrying problems with base-ten blocks or drawings before sending the page home.
- How do I teach carrying to a third grader?
- Show it with tens and ones blocks: ten ones swap for one ten. Then connect the picture to the written digit above the tens column. Do a handful together before they work alone.
- Why does my child misalign the digits?
- Ones must sit under ones, and tens under tens. The Stacked layout helps, and graph paper helps more. Ask the child to say the place of each digit aloud as they write it.
- Can I mix in subtraction practice?
- Yes. The Grade 3 subtraction page uses the same 0 to 100 range, so alternating the two keeps both skills fresh. Missing number mode also shows how the operations are linked.
