Rounding to the Nearest 10 Worksheets

Rounding to the nearest 10 worksheets give numbers that need a real decision: does this one go up or down to the next ten? Good for second and third graders, and for older kids who still hesitate on numbers ending in 5.

Printing help

Run it after a short number line demo: draw a line from 20 to 30 and mark the halfway point. Students then work the page in about ten minutes, writing the rounded number after the approximately sign. Use the answer key for a quick whole-group check, and ask kids to explain one problem aloud using the ones digit. A 5 versions pack lets neighbors work independently.

The ones digit is the only one that matters. Four or less means the number stays with the lower ten, five or more means it moves up. Children get stuck on the 5 itself, and on numbers with a 9 in the tens place, where rounding up changes the hundreds digit too. Before this comes skip counting by tens and knowing place value. After it comes rounding to the nearest 100, then estimating sums and differences.

Round to is set to 10 here, but you can switch to 100 or 1,000 when the class is ready, or use the matching pages. For first exposure choose 12 problems so each one gets full attention. For review, 30 problems works as a speed round. Ask students to circle the ones digit before rounding if they keep rounding the wrong place.

Which way does a 5 round?
Up. A ones digit of 5 rounds to the higher ten, whatever the other digits are. The answer key follows that rule, which matches what most American classrooms teach.
Why can rounding to ten change the hundreds digit?
When a number ends in a 9 in the tens place, rounding up carries through the tens and into the hundreds, just like adding one to a row of nines. Kids often miss this, so give them a few examples with 9s.
How do I help a child who rounds the wrong digit?
Have them underline the tens place, then circle the digit to its right. That circled digit makes the decision. Saying the sentence out loud, "the ones digit is 7, so go up," builds the routine.
