Letter A Coloring Page

Letter A Coloring Page gives preschoolers a big capital A to color, with a loose scatter of bubbles around it. It starts an alphabet series for parents teaching letters at home and teachers building a classroom wall. The A has a pointed top and a crossbar.

Printing help

Print it on the first day of an alphabet unit and let the child color the A while you say its name and sound. Ten minutes is plenty for a three or four year old. After coloring, ask them to find the A on a cereal box or book cover. Hit New version for a second copy with different bubbles, which is handy for siblings. Color online works on a tablet.

Capital A is built from two slanted strokes that meet at a point and a short crossbar between them. Young children often color past the pointed top or skip the narrow space beneath the bar. Coloring it slowly teaches them to follow diagonal edges, a harder motion than vertical lines. Tracing the A with a finger first helps. It pairs naturally with the short sound in apple and ant, and B is the next letter.

Offer crayons for ages 2 to 4 and markers for older children. A good variation is coloring the A in a favorite color and the bubbles in one other color. Another is outlining the letter first with a single bold crayon, then filling the inside. For a classroom, print one A per child and tape them together.

Why is the crossbar of A hard for little ones?
It sits in a narrow triangle beneath the point, so crayons tend to overshoot. Tracing the bar with a finger first, then coloring the space, helps the hand learn where to stop.
Which words go with A while coloring?
Try apple, ant, alligator and astronaut for the short A sound, and acorn or ape for the long A. Saying one word per color keeps the sound attached to the shape.
Should I teach uppercase or lowercase A first?
Most programs start with uppercase because the shapes are simpler and children see them in names. Add the lowercase a soon after, noting that it looks quite different from the capital.
