Identifying Fractions Worksheets

Twelve shaded models per page, alternating between a circle cut into equal slices and a bar cut into equal parts. The student counts the shaded parts and the total and writes the fraction on the blank. Denominators run from halves to sixths at the easy setting and up to twelfths at the hardest. The key writes the fraction exactly as the model shows it, so 3 of 6 slices is 3/6, which is the honest answer at this stage; simplifying has its own page.

FAQ

Why circles and bars on the same page?

Because students who only ever see pizzas struggle when fractions turn up as lengths or number lines. Alternating the two models on one page builds the idea that the fraction is about equal parts, not about the shape.

Does the shaded part always start at the top?

Yes, shading fills slices clockwise from twelve o'clock and bar cells from the left, which makes counting consistent and keeps the printouts easy to grade at a glance.

Can students work these on a tablet?

Yes. Practice online puts a pen tool over the same sheet, so the fraction can be written with a stylus or finger and wiped for another try.

How do I print this fractions worksheet?

Click Download PDF and print at 100% scale. The page is already sized for US Letter with printer-safe margins, so no fit-to-page fiddling is needed.

Is the answer 3/6 or 1/2?

3/6 on this page. The model shows six parts with three shaded, and reading the model is the skill being practiced. The simplifying page linked below is where 3/6 becomes 1/2.

What does the Denominators control change?

The largest denominator the generator may use: 6, 10 or 12. Smaller denominators keep the numbers friendly for a first pass; 12 brings in sevenths, ninths and elevenths, which force the general method instead of pattern-spotting.

Can I get different versions for each student?

Turn on the 5 versions switch before downloading. You get five different sheets in one PDF, each with its own answer key, so neighbouring desks cannot copy.
