Dolch First Grade Sight Words Worksheets

Aim for four or five words in a sitting, roughly ten minutes. Read the word, trace the solid model, then follow the dashed repeats and cover the model for the last copy. Teachers can use it as morning work for one week. Parents can ask the child to hunt for the day's words in a book. Save the longer words, such as because of spelling patterns, for the end of the session.

At this stage, words stop looking alike and spelling patterns begin to matter. Several of them break phonics rules, such as could, every, once and walk, and tracing them a few times is the quickest way to recognize them on sight. Common mistakes are leaving out silent letters or swapping letters inside a word. Dolch primer comes first. After this list comes the Dolch second grade set.

Medium lines match first grade paper. Choose Large if letters spill out of the guides, and Small once the writing is steady. The Word list control lets you move back to primer for a child who finds this list too hard. For a variation, ask for a cursive copy of a few words by switching Style, but only if your class is already learning it.
