First Grade Handwriting Paper
First grade handwriting paper has nine rows of three lines, for first and second graders whose letters stay on the line but still need the dashed midline. Use it for spelling tests, sentence copying and short free writing.
First and second grade.
About this page
Printing helpPrint it for a daily five-minute sentence: you write one, the child copies it, and you check letter height together. Teachers use it for weekly spelling tests, handing out a sheet to each student with the header on. At home, nine rows make a good page for copying a short poem. Press Write online if you want to use a tablet with a stylus, then print a clean copy for the folder.
Nine rows give each line less height than the large size, so letters must be smaller and more controlled. The midline shows where lowercase letters stop, the baseline anchors them, and the gap below holds tails of g, j, p, q and y. Children often forget to drop descenders below the baseline or crowd tall letters. After this size comes the small size for confident writers.
Light lines fit pencil work well. Choose Regular for copies in a class set or for anyone who finds the guide hard to see. If letters keep spilling outside the rows, go back to Line size Large; if the rows look empty because the writing is small and steady, try Small. Keep the header on for turned-in work.
- Which grade is the medium size meant for?
- First and second grade, usually once a child can keep letters on the baseline. If your child still writes very large or uneven letters, the large size offers more room.
- How many rows are on this page?
- Nine rows of three lines on one page. That is enough for a spelling list of eight or nine words, or a short paragraph copied from a book.
- My child ignores the dashed line. What now?
- Show them where short letters touch it, then have them trace a row of a, c and e that stop at the dash. Use a colored pencil to mark the midline on the first row until it becomes a habit.
