Short Vowel Sort Worksheets

Hand out the sheet after the five short vowels have each been taught. A student reads a word, listens to the middle sound and copies it into the matching column. Allow fifteen minutes. It works as a Friday review or a station task. Use the answer key to mark a stack quickly. With 5 versions, each student at a table gets a different bank, so there is nothing to copy. Sorting asks for more than reading: the student must isolate the middle sound and compare it to the other four. Common mistakes are putting short e words under i and short o words under a, since those pairs sound alike. Children should be able to read CVC words first. Let students work with a pencil and a set of five vowel cards on the desk. Start with the words they know, then leave the harder ones for last. For a younger group, do the first column together as a class. If sorting feels easy, switch Mode to Missing vowel for a harder task, or Rhyming for matching.

What if a student gets stuck on one column?

Have them say the remaining words slowly and listen for the middle sound. Using vowel cards on the desk helps. Do not tell the answer. Ask them to compare the word to a known one like cat.

Is this harder than a missing vowel page?

It tests a different skill. Sorting needs the child to recognize the vowel sound and match it to a letter, while missing vowel needs them to supply it. Most find sorting a gentler first step.

Which grade is this for?

It suits late kindergarten and first grade, after all five short vowels have been introduced. Older students who still mix e and i can use it for remediation in a small group.
