About this page
Printing helpGive each player a card and some counters or crayons, then read one animal at a time from the call sheet, ticking it as you go. A game on a 5 by 5 card lasts around fifteen to twenty minutes. Pick 1 or 2 cards per page: two means less paper in a big class. Younger players can play on a 3 by 3 card. Keep the call sheet to confirm a winner, since every called word is ticked on it.
Bingo is a reading game in disguise. Players scan a grid for a word they hear, which builds sight-word recognition and letter-by-letter matching. The animals list moves from three-letter words like cat and pig up to elephant, squirrel and hedgehog, so one set suits mixed ages. Children often confuse look-alike words such as seal and sheep, or shark and snake. Reading the word aloud when marking helps. A good next step is having a child take the caller's role.
Grid sets the length of a round: 3 by 3 for preschool and kindergarten, 4 by 4 for grade one and two, 5 by 5 for older kids. The free center square speeds up games on large cards, so turn it off for a longer round. Cards per page can be 1 or 2. Under Your own words, enter a zoo field trip list. Use 5 versions for a bigger group.
- How many animal words does a card use?
- A 5 by 5 card has 24 word squares with the free center on. A 4 by 4 card uses 16 and a 3 by 3 card uses 9, all drawn from the same list of 40.
- Does the call sheet match the cards?
- Yes. It lists the same animal words in a shuffled order with a box beside each one. Tick the box as you call it, and you can check any winning row against it.
- What grid works for a mixed-age class?
- Use the 4 by 4 grid. It is quick enough for kindergarteners with help and still holds attention for second graders. Older children can take 5 by 5 cards while the same caller reads for everyone.
