Each row is a handful of coins, sorted largest value first, the way you would teach a child to count them: quarters, then dimes, nickels, pennies. The coins are drawn to their real relative sizes (a dime smaller than a penny, which is the detail kids find surprising) and labeled with their value. The student writes the total on the line. Why are the coins sorted?
Because counting from the largest coin down is the strategy being taught, and an unsorted row makes students hunt instead of count. Once they can do this page, mix real coins on the desk for the unsorted version.
Do the downloads include answer keys?
