Missing Vowel Worksheets

Hand over a pencil and let the child work from top to bottom, reading each frame aloud and trying vowels until one makes a real word, then writing it in. A full page takes about fifteen minutes. All five short vowels appear in the mix, so no pattern gives it away. The answer key lets you check quickly. With 5 versions, a group can work at the same time without copying. A finished page is good reading material afterward.

Here the child must choose the vowel, not just hear one. That is harder than single-vowel pages, because the consonants alone leave several possibilities. The usual stumbling point is a frame where two vowels sound close, such as e and i. Do the single vowel pages first, since they train the ear one sound at a time. After this page, children are ready for longer word lists, short sentences and simple decodable books.

Ask the child to say the word with each vowel in turn and listen for the real one. Start with the frames they find easy. If this feels too hard, return to the short a, e, i, o or u page for a single vowel. Switch Mode to Vowel sort or Rhyming for a different angle. New version gives a fresh set.

Can the child guess instead of reading?

They can try each vowel, and that is a fine strategy: say the word each way and listen for the real one. Since every frame has one answer, guessing cannot succeed twice.

How is this different from the single vowel pages?

Those pages give one vowel for every blank. This one mixes all five, so the child must decide which vowel fits. Move here once the single vowel pages feel comfortable.

What should I do if my child fills every box with a?

Go back to the short vowel page for each sound. Say the frame with different vowels and listen. A few rounds of cat, cot and cut usually opens the ear.
