Counting Objects to 20 Worksheets

Hand it over once counting to ten is easy. A child should say the numbers aloud, then write the total on the line. Twelve groups take roughly fifteen minutes. Show them the shortcut: when they see two full rows, they can say ten and keep going from eleven, rather than starting over. Use the answer key to check together, and ask them to explain one answer they got right and one they got wrong.

Teen numbers are where counting starts to turn into place value. Eleven through nineteen are spoken oddly in English, so children mix up thirteen and thirty, or skip fourteen. Seeing a full ten laid out first, then some extras, ties the word to the structure: ten and four more. Count to 20 is the right setting for this page. If it feels too easy, select 30 for longer groups, and use 10 to rebuild confidence after a rough day. Six problems per page for a child who rushes, twenty for a review block. Remind the child to count the last row slowly, since that is where most teen miscounts happen.

Why does my child lose track after ten?

Teen counting words are irregular, and the count has no landmark to hold on to. Teach them to see two full rows as ten, then count the leftover shapes on from eleven.

Should my child count one by one or in groups?

One by one at first. Once that is steady, let them group by the rows of five and count on from five, ten or fifteen. Both methods get the same answer, and grouping is quicker.

Is writing the teen numerals a problem?

It often is. Some children reverse the digits and write them backward. Make a model with a number line nearby, and let them practice the tens digit first, since every teen starts with 1.
