About this page

Printing help

Hand it out as a ten to fifteen minute seat activity after a zoo trip, a farm unit, or a read-aloud with animal characters. Children work through the lines in any order, so let them grab the three-letter ones first for quick wins. Pairs can race the clock or share one pencil and talk through each guess. Check with the answer key afterward, then flip the page over and have each child draw their favorite animal from the list. The 5 versions switch makes a set for a whole row of desks.

The sheet trains spelling by sight: a child has to hold a picture of the word, then rebuild it from loose letters. Short words like BEE, ANT and PIG are solved by trying two or three orders. Longer ones such as RABBIT and MONKEY push children to look for familiar chunks like -IT or -KEY. The common stall is reading letters left to right only and giving up. Encourage moving letters in your head, or copying them into a circle first. After this, try bigger vocabulary lists.

Choose Bank + first letter for kindergarten through first grade, since the opening letter cuts the guessing sharply. Word bank alone fits second and third grade. Pick None for fourth grade and up, or for an adult looking for a quick brain warm-up. Want to match a science unit on, say, mammals only? Paste your own list into Your own words and the page rebuilds around it.

What if a child cannot read the scrambled letters?
Switch Hints to Bank + first letter and read the bank aloud together. Let the child match one animal at a time by its first letter and length. Starting with the three-letter lines keeps the first few wins easy.
Can the animals list be narrowed to one habitat?
Yes. Type your own entries into Your own words, such as only forest or only pond animals. You can use 3 to 30 words of up to 14 letters, and the page replaces the animal list with yours.
Are the scrambles different each time I press New version?
Yes. The animals come back in a new order with newly mixed letters, so the same child can do another sheet the next day. No scramble spells its own answer.
