Give twelve rows as a ten to fifteen minute task and tell the child to find the step before touching the blanks. The first two boxes are always filled, so subtract them. Then fill the gaps and read the whole row back to check. Use the answer key to mark it together. If the page goes smoothly, run it again with a new version, or choose a different Count by setting.

Mixing steps takes away the chance to coast on a rhythm. The child must detect the pattern, hold it, and apply it, and that is the core of multiplication. Counting by threes and fours is the usual bridge to the times tables because counting by fours is the four times table in order. Where kids stall: they guess the step from one pair, or lose it across a gap of two boxes.

This page opens on 2 to 5, 10, which mixes steps from two through five and ten. Switch to 2, 5, 10 for a gentler sheet, or 3 to 9 once those are comfortable, which brings in 6 through 9 and is the hardest option. Choose six rows for a short drill, twenty for a longer one. Say each row aloud, in a whisper, to catch mistakes.

How does my child figure out the step?

Subtract the first two filled boxes. The difference is the step. They can confirm it by checking that the next filled box matches adding the step again.

Is skip counting the same as learning times tables?

It is the sequence version. Counting by fours gives the four times table in order. Multiplication adds the ability to jump straight to any fact, such as 4 times 7, without counting.

What if my child fills the wrong number into a gap of two?

Have them work forward from the left box and check that the final number lands on the next filled box. If it does not, the step or an addition was wrong somewhere.
