About this page
Printing helpHand it out the week you start a fall unit, or keep it near the apple cider at a harvest event. It takes ten to twenty minutes. In class, pair children and let them solve the short words first. Use the answer key to mark, then take the class outside to find three things from the list in real life: a leaf, an acorn, something orange. At home, solve while the leaves are being raked.
The words reach from simple (HAY, CORN, WIND) to demanding (CHESTNUT, FOLIAGE, MIGRATION). Many are nouns children know from walks and school units, so spelling them feels natural. A pattern worth noticing is silent letters, like the T in CHESTNUT, and the -TION in MIGRATION. The mixed lengths allow different readers to succeed on the same sheet. Connecting it to a science lesson on seasons or leaf color change makes the vocabulary stick.
Younger children should keep the bank and first letters. Third and fourth graders can try the plain bank. Keep None for older students or adults. If your class is studying one topic, such as harvest foods, type APPLE, CIDER, GOURD, PUMPKIN and CORN into Your own words and the page scrambles only those.
- Why are there 28 words on the fall sheet?
- This theme list holds 28 words, so 28 lines print. A custom list can contain between three and thirty words if you need a different count.
- Does it work for a harvest festival or fair?
- Yes. Print the 5 versions, set pencils on the tables, and give a small prize to the first correct page. The answer key is for the host.
- Which fall words give children trouble?
- CHESTNUT, SCARECROW and MIGRATION cause the most stalls. For SCARECROW, point out the two small words SCARE and CROW hidden inside it, then let the child place the remaining letters.
