Bring it out in the first weeks of September, for an October party or in a November harvest unit. The easy puzzle takes five minutes, hard fills a quiet hour in a small group. Choose 5 versions for a table, check with the answer key, or let kids solve on screen with a finger. Pair it with a leaf walk and ask which of the words they can spot outside.

Words move from concrete (ACORN, MAPLE, CIDER) to ones that name the season (AUTUMN, OCTOBER, NOVEMBER) and science ideas (MIGRATION, HARVEST). That range lets one theme work for first graders and fifth graders alike. Double letters in words such as SWEATER or SQUIRREL tend to be tricky, so slow, letter-by-letter scanning helps. Which words make good spelling follow-up?

Squirrel, scarecrow and sweater are the best candidates. Have children cover the word list, write each one from memory, then check against the puzzle. Double letters are the most common mistake.
