About this page
Printing helpSlip this into the folder for the class Halloween party, or put it out on the table while the candy is being sorted after trick-or-treating. It takes most children around fifteen minutes. Run it as a team game: groups of three share one sheet and the first group with every line right wins. The answer key is quick for a teacher to scan. Leftover time? Have each child write a short spooky sentence using three of the unscrambled words.
Unscrambling here means testing spelling memory under a theme that motivates reluctant readers. Words like CAULDRON, SKELETON and WEREWOLF contain common but tricky letter pairs such as AU and EL. Short words like WEB, OWL and BOO are the warm-up. A usual snag is forgetting the double letters in words like BROOM and COBWEB. If a child stalls, ask them to find the vowels first and then place the consonants around them.
Younger trick-or-treaters do well with the bank and first letters. For a classroom of mixed readers, print the bank version and tell fast finishers to try None on a new version. For a costume party with adults, a timed round with no hints is entertaining. You can also enter names of your own party games or costumes under Your own words.
- Is this Halloween scramble too scary for young children?
- No. The list uses cartoon-level words like GHOST, PUMPKIN and COSTUME. If a word bothers a child, enter a replacement list in Your own words and leave out SKULL or GRAVEYARD.
- How do I run this as a party contest?
- Give each team the same version and a ten minute limit. Count correct lines, not just finished ones. Hand out the answer key only after pencils are down so teams cannot peek.
- What is the hardest word on the Halloween sheet?
- Most children find CAULDRON and WEREWOLF hardest because the letters are long and not easy to guess from the front. Turn on first-letter hints and they usually crack both.
