About this page
Printing helpTeachers can use it in the last half hour before the break, once the tests are done and the room is restless. At home, put a sheet and a pencil at each kid's place so the table is quiet while the food comes out. It takes about fifteen minutes. Older cousins can team up with younger ones and read the clues aloud. Check using the answer key, then ask everyone to say one thing they are grateful for using a word from the page.
The list mixes small words like NAP, BIG and DAY with longer ones such as HARVEST and GATHERING, so one sheet suits a spread of reading levels. Children practice noticing endings and blends: -ING, TH, ST. The usual trouble spot is GRATEFUL, where the ending -FUL scrambles into odd looking clumps. Because there is a gratitude theme in the words, the finished page can lead into a short writing prompt or a thank-you card.
For first and second grade, keep the first-letter hint on. Third grade and up can go with the word bank only. For a family contest where adults take part, remove all hints. If you want a version about only foods, type PIE, GRAVY, STUFF, BREAD and other words into Your own words and the page will use just those.
- Does the Thanksgiving scramble include any history words?
- No. The words are about the meal and the day: foods, family, and feelings such as JOY and HAPPY. For a history unit, enter your own vocabulary under Your own words.
- How can I use it for a large family gathering?
- Print the 5 versions so neighbors cannot copy, and set a ten minute timer. Mixed ages work well if kids use the bank and adults skip it. Mark with the answer key.
- My child is stuck on GRATEFUL. Any trick?
- Have them look for the ending -FUL and the start GRAT first, then fit the middle letters. With hints on, the opening G is already printed on the line, which helps.
