Printing help

Pass out one card per child at your autumn party or during a rainy recess. The caller reads the words from the call sheet in order and ticks each one. A 5 x 5 round runs about ten to fifteen minutes. Candy corn, dried beans or small leaves make fitting markers. For a longer event, print several pages with the 5 versions switch and play a round for each. The answer key doubles as your checking sheet.

Short words like HAY, OWL and CORN work for early readers, and mid-length ones such as MAPLE, PUMPKIN and HARVEST bring in silent letters and double sounds. The longest words, SCARECROW and MIGRATION, are good for syllable clapping. Children often mix up LEAF and LEAVES, which is a chance to talk about plural forms. The list also covers OCTOBER and NOVEMBER, so capital letters for months come up naturally.

In kindergarten, try a 3 x 3 grid and read each word while showing a real acorn or leaf. In grades 2 to 4, the 5 x 5 grid fills the whole activity block. Turn off the free center for a harder game. Add your own words, such as names of local trees or a class story, to make the cards match your fall unit.

Does fall bingo work for a Halloween-free harvest party?
Yes. Most words are about the harvest and weather, such as APPLE, CIDER, HARVEST and FOLIAGE. Nothing on the list is a costume or holiday character, so it suits schools that skip Halloween.
How can I use fall bingo to teach plurals?
Call LEAF and LEAVES in separate rounds and ask players which one is on their card. Then have them say the rule: f changes to v before es. It takes only a minute.
Can I mix fall bingo with a nature walk?
Yes. Print a 3 x 3 card, then mark words as you find the real thing outdoors, like ACORN, LEAF or MAPLE. It becomes a scavenger hunt instead of a called game.
