About this page
Printing helpTake it into the gym on a wet day, or hand it to a team during travel to an away game. Allow ten to twenty minutes. Gym classes can divide into teams, with each team collecting a point for every correct line. After the answer key, ask players to demonstrate or name a rule for the sport they solved. Coaches also use it as a no-pressure activity during pre-game waiting time.
Sports vocabulary brings out both everyday and subject-specific words: GOAL, MEDAL and TROPHY next to GYMNAST, REFEREE and ARCHERY. The longer ones have letter groups worth noticing, such as -ING in BOXING and ROWING, or the double L in BASEBALL and FOOTBALL. Children who play will recognize the words by sound, which helps them spell. A usual error is mixing up the E and F in REFEREE, so have them say the word slowly.
Use the bank with first letters for kids around six to eight. The bank alone suits nine to eleven. Turn hints off for team rounds with older players. For a single-sport lesson, enter your own words, such as BASKET, COURT, DRIBBLE and SCORE, into Your own words. A coach can even use players' names, as long as each entry is up to 14 letters.
- Can I make a scramble for just one sport?
- Yes. Put terms for that sport in Your own words, three to thirty entries. The page scrambles those and keeps the hint choices and answer key.
- Is this a good activity for a gym class?
- It works well as a cool-down or rainy-day task. Teams can solve one sheet together, and the 5 versions option stops neighboring teams from copying answers off each other.
- Which sports words are the hardest?
- REFEREE, MARATHON and GYMNAST tend to give the most trouble. Looking for the repeated E in REFEREE or the ending -ON in MARATHON helps, and the first-letter hint narrows the rest.
