Printing help

Hand out the cards at the start of a PE class or a team gathering and let the coach or a student act as caller. Read from the call sheet in order and tick each word. A 5 x 5 round takes roughly ten to fifteen minutes, which fits a classroom block or a bus ride. Dry-erase markers on laminated cards let you reuse the same sheets for several rounds. Print the 5 versions switch for a whole team so neighbors do not share a card.

The list mixes three-letter words like RUN and SKI with long ones such as VOLLEYBALL and BASKETBALL, so readers get both quick matches and a real decoding job. Sports words are often compound or Greek in origin, and children stumble on BASEBALL versus FOOTBALL because they share the same ending. Calling the word without showing it trains listening and matching. Older players can describe each sport in one sentence before they mark the square.

With young athletes, use a 3 x 3 card and one card per page for large print. For a middle school team, 5 x 5 with the free center fills a full break. If your school plays only certain sports, paste those names in Your own words, such as GOLF, RUGBY and ARCHERY, and drop the rest. Turning off the free center makes every square count.

Does sports bingo work as a PE rainy-day activity?
Yes. It needs only paper and markers, and players stay seated. Add movement by letting each winner demonstrate the sport they just marked, or have the group mime the word before you move on.
Which sports words are hardest for young readers?
VOLLEYBALL, BASKETBALL, MARATHON and GYMNAST are the long ones. Pairs like BASEBALL and FOOTBALL look alike. Stay on a 3 x 3 grid with younger kids and say each long word twice.
Can each team get its own bingo card?
Yes. Turn on the 5 versions switch for several pages of different cards, then hand one out per player or per team. Each card is arranged differently, so teams will not all win on the same call.
