About this page

Printing help

Use it after reading about the solar system, as a ten to twenty minute review activity. Teachers can print the 5 versions and give neighbors different sheets. At home, solve it by flashlight in a blanket fort. Check with the answer key, then ask children to sort the answers into planets, things that fly, and things you see in the sky. Early finishers can put the planet names in order from the sun.

The list covers everyday space words (STAR, MOON, ORBIT) and bigger ones such as ASTEROID, SATELLITE and ASTRONAUT. Children meet planet names as spelling challenges, including MERCURY, JUPITER and NEPTUNE, where the letter patterns are not like ordinary English words. Common stall: they cannot tell where to start with a long word. Suggest finding the vowels first, then trying prefixes like AST-. The sheet also supports vocabulary for later science units.

Younger children usually need the first-letter hint. Third and fourth graders can use the bank. Space fans of any age can choose None, since they often know the planets already. To focus on planets alone, type MARS, VENUS, EARTH and the rest under Your own words. You can combine this with a class model of the solar system.

Does the space scramble include all the planets?
No. It includes MARS, VENUS, EARTH, SATURN, JUPITER, NEPTUNE, MERCURY and PLUTO among its words. To get a full planet-only sheet, type your own list in Your own words.
What grade level suits the space list?
Grades two to five handle it well with the bank turned on. Younger children can try it with first-letter hints and focus on SUN, SKY and MARS.
Can the sheet support a solar system test review?
Yes. Enter the exact terms from your unit, up to thirty words of up to 14 letters, and switch hints off. Let students check themselves with the answer key.
