Reach for it during a solar system unit, on a rainy indoor recess, or at a space-themed party table. The easy sheet is quick, about five minutes, and the hard one can fill a quiet half hour. Turn on the answer key to check the long words, or pick 5 versions so friends each solve a different grid. Younger kids can try it on a tablet with a finger before moving to paper.

Easy words are friendly to sound out (STAR, MARS, SKY). Medium brings in SATURN, NEBULA and VENUS, and hard adds JUPITER, NEPTUNE and ASTEROID, which are real science vocabulary. Children often swap letters in tricky names like MERCURY or GRAVITY, so finding each one letter by letter doubles as spelling practice. A good follow-up is to put the planets they found in order from the sun.

Beginners and younger siblings do best on easy, with short words across and down on 10x10. Medium uses a 15x15 grid with diagonals, a comfortable match for grades two to four. Which planets show up in the puzzle?

Mars is on the easy grid. Medium adds Venus, Earth, Pluto and Saturn, and hard brings in Jupiter, Neptune and Mercury. The printed word list under the grid is what the child searches for.

Are the space words too hard for second graders?

Easy and medium are usually fine. Medium has words like ROCKET, COMET and GALAXY on a 15x15 grid. Hard words such as TELESCOPE and SATELLITE suit older, stronger readers better.
