About this page

Printing help

Put it on the table before a fruit tasting or snack time, and let children solve a few words while they wait. A full sheet takes around ten to fifteen minutes, but it splits easily: do the first ten with younger kids and finish another day. After checking with the answer key, ask which fruits they have tried. Use 5 versions when siblings or neighbors sit together, so the scrambles do not match.

The list rises in length from three letters to eleven, so one sheet covers spelling at several stages. Children handle fig, lime and date quickly because the words are short and common. Trouble tends to come from unusual names like yuzu, goji, acai and kumquat, where there is no picture to lean on. Longer berries share the ending BERRY, which is a useful chunk to spot. Follow up by sorting solved words into fruits that grow on trees, vines or bushes.

Bank + first letter helps grade one and two, and it matters here since several names share letters. Word bank suits grade three and up. None makes the page much harder, with names like nectarine and tangerine. Under Your own words, enter the fruits from a class garden or a recipe. Press New version for another scramble of the same fruits.

Why are some odd fruits like yuzu and goji on the list?
They add variety and give stronger readers a challenge. A child who has never seen yuzu can only solve it from letters, which is a fair test of decoding rather than guessing from a picture.
What is the quickest way to unscramble a long fruit name?
Look for a known ending first. BERRY in raspberry, blueberry and cranberry, and APPLE in pineapple, are a start. Then work on the front letters. Writing the letters in a circle sometimes helps.
Can I use this for a nutrition lesson?
Yes. After solving, have students sort the fruits by color or by when they ripen, or replace the list through Your own words with the fruits from your lesson, such as citrus varieties.
