Printing help

Pair it with a real fruit tasting: call a word, and when it comes up, pass around a slice of the fruit if you have one. Without fruit, a picture book works. A 3 x 3 round takes five minutes, a 5 x 5 round about twelve. Dried fruit pieces make edible markers when allergies allow. Print more pages with the 5 versions switch so a group can play several rounds, and let the winner pick next week's tasting fruit.

Four-letter words such as FIG, LIME, PEAR and PLUM suit beginners, while NECTARINE, TANGERINE, RASPBERRY and BLUEBERRY need careful reading. Berry names show compound structure: BLUE plus BERRY, RASP plus BERRY. Some less common fruits, YUZU, GOJI and ACAI, bring in new vocabulary. Children often confuse PEACH with PEAR, and LIME with LEMON, since the starts match. Spelling tricky ones like PINEAPPLE rewards a slow look.

For preschoolers, use a 3 x 3 card with a real fruit or picture beside each call. For grades 2 to 5, 5 x 5 uses nearly the full list. If a class has allergies or cultural preferences, paste your own list into Your own words. A fun variation: group players by color and ask them to sort their marked fruits afterward.

Which fruit words are easiest for new readers?
FIG, LIME, PEAR, PLUM, KIWI and DATE have three or four letters. Paste only those with other short fruit words into Your own words for a beginner card.
Are there unusual fruits on the list?
Yes: YUZU, GOJI, ACAI and KUMQUAT. They make good discussion starters. Ask who has tried one, or look up together where each one grows and how it is eaten.
Can I play fruits bingo with a taste test?
Yes. Check allergies first, then offer small pieces of the fruit that was called. Keep it to a few fruits, since a 5 x 5 game can call many more.
