Printing help

Bring it out after a bird walk or a feeder-watching week, so the names are fresh. Most children finish in ten to fifteen minutes. In a classroom, set pairs to solve and then sort the answers into birds that fly, swim and walk. Parents can pair it with a field guide, finding each solved bird in the book. The answer key supports quick checking, and 5 versions keep a reading group from sharing answers.

The list mixes bird names with bird parts and words: wing, beak, plume, talon, egg and song. That makes it a vocabulary page as well as a spelling one. Short names like owl, jay and hen come quickly. Compound or longer names such as bluejay, seagull and cardinal take careful letter work. Children commonly mistake swallow for a verb, and the silent letters in some names add trouble. Move on afterward to a short report on one bird from the list.

Choose Bank + first letter for kindergarten through grade two. Word bank is the usual setting for grades three and four. None suits a bird club that already knows the names. Use Your own words to scramble birds from your own region, such as the ones that visit your schoolyard. Click New version for another order of the same words.

Does the list have only bird names?
No. Alongside owl, eagle and robin it includes bird words like wing, beak, nest, egg, plume and talon, so children also learn the parts of a bird.
Which birds are hardest to unscramble?
Flamingo, cardinal and sparrow take the longest because of their length. Seagull and bluejay are compound words, so finding the two halves, sea and gull or blue and jay, makes them easier.
Can I scramble the birds in my own area?
Yes. Enter your local species in Your own words and the sheet uses that list. A schoolyard list of five or six birds gives a short, personal version students enjoy.
