About this page
Printing helpPair it with a bird book or a nature walk. Give each child a card and call the words from the sheet in order. When a bird name comes up, show its photo and ask where it lives. A 3 x 3 round fits five minutes before recess, and a 5 x 5 round about twelve to fifteen. Use feathers cut from paper, or sunflower kernels, as markers. Make a second round with the New version button.
Words like OWL, JAY and HEN suit beginners. Bird parts, WING, BEAK, TALON and PLUME, add anatomy vocabulary, and NEST, EGG and SONG describe what birds do. Longer bird names, such as CARDINAL, FLAMINGO and SPARROW, need careful decoding. Children confuse HAWK and HERON or CRANE and STORK because of similar shapes. Compound names like BLUEJAY and SEAGULL show how color or place joins a word.
For ages 4 to 6, take a 3 x 3 card with photos of the birds nearby. For ages 8 and up, 5 x 5 uses the full list including TALON and PLUME. Paste local bird names into Your own words if you are preparing for a nature walk, so children find on paper what they will look for outside.
- Can birds bingo go with a real birdwatching walk?
- Yes. Paste the species you expect to see, then mark each word when someone spots the bird. It turns the card into a checklist instead of a called game.
- Are there bird body parts on the list?
- Yes: WING, BEAK, TALON and PLUME. They let you ask follow-up questions about how a bird uses each part, such as why a HAWK has a TALON.
- Which birds on the list live in cold places?
- PENGUIN is the clearest example, and some SEAGULL and GOOSE species winter in cold regions too. Use it as a prompt to look at a map together.
