Printing help

Use it in the first days back, when the room is still settling and you want something calm that students can start on their own. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes. Parents can slip it into the last week of summer as a gentle reset. Take turns reading the answers aloud and let the class vote on their favorite supply. Hand out the 5 versions to neighbors, and keep the answer key for quick marking at the end.

Every word here is something a child will meet within a week of returning: bus, locker-room words like gym, supplies like glue and scissors, and routines like homework and test. Solving them reconnects spelling with familiar objects. The long words, backpack, notebook and homework, are compound words, so spotting the two halves is the best strategy. Children often mix up the letters in scissors because of its double s. Afterward, ask them to put three words in one sentence about their day.

Bank + first letter works for grade one and the youngest second graders. Word bank only suits most of grades two to four. Switch Hints to None for an older class using this as a timed icebreaker. Under Your own words, type room numbers, teacher names or class rules to make the sheet about your own room, and select New version before copying.

Can I add my own classroom words to this scramble?
Yes. Type your list into Your own words and the sheet uses it in place of the school words, so you can include your room rules, a teacher's name or this year's spelling words.
Which words are compound words on this sheet?
Notebook, backpack and homework are each two words joined. Teach children to hunt for the small word they recognize first, such as book or pack, then place the remaining letters around it.
Is this a good icebreaker for older students?
It can be, with Hints set to None and a timer. Split into small groups and see who finishes first. Middle schoolers tend to enjoy the speed round more than a silent worksheet.
