About this page
Printing helpPlay it on day one or two, when the class needs a calm, low-pressure activity. Print a card for each student and read the words in order from the call sheet. A 5 x 5 round takes about fifteen minutes. Pause after tricky words like SUBJECT or PRIMARY to ask what they mean at school. Parents can run a 3 x 3 round the week before term to get a child talking about the routine. Use New version for later rounds.
Short words like PEN, INK, BAG and DESK are quick for new readers, while HOMEWORK, BACKPACK and SCISSORS are compound or tricky words that return all year. Subject words, MATH, SCIENCE, HISTORY and READ, give children a chance to name what they will study. Students often write SCISSORS with a missing s or c, so seeing it in print helps. The list also teaches school roles such as TEACHER and STUDENT.
In kindergarten, take a 3 x 3 card with large print and read each word together. For grades 3 to 6, 5 x 5 uses much of the list and suits a getting-to-know-you game. Add a twist: have students share a school supply they own whenever they mark a square. Paste your own words, such as room numbers or class rules, to make it specific to your classroom.
- Is back to school bingo a good first-day activity?
- Yes. It is quiet, needs no prior knowledge and gets everyone reading together. Keep rounds short, around five to ten minutes, so new students stay comfortable.
- Can parents use it before the school year starts?
- Yes. A short 3 x 3 round at home lets a child hear and read words like BELL, DESK and BACKPACK, and talk about what each means in their new classroom.
- How do I add my own classroom rules to the cards?
- Paste your words, such as LINE, QUIET, SHARE and LISTEN, into Your own words. Use at least eight for a 3 x 3 card or 24 for a full 5 x 5.
