About this page
Printing helpTry it as a classroom party game the day before Thanksgiving break, or as an after-dinner game with grandparents and cousins. Give out cards and dried corn kernels or pennies for markers, then call words from the sheet. A 5 by 5 round lasts around fifteen minutes. Printing 2 cards per page keeps the paper count down. Older relatives can be callers while children cover their squares.
The list blends food (pie, stuffing, potatoes), season (fall, autumn, harvest) and feeling words (thank, grateful, blessing, together), so it connects reading practice to a holiday children already know. Short words such as pie, eat and nap give beginners an easy start, while gathering and cranberry challenge fluent readers. Look-alikes include stuff and stuffing, or thank and grateful. Players read each word before marking, which keeps the game about reading rather than guessing.
Use 3 by 3 for young children at a family table, 4 by 4 for early primary, and 5 by 5 for a longer game with older players. Turn off Free center square for a longer round. Under Your own words, add family dishes or names of relatives for a personal version. Pick 1 card per page if a toddler or grandparent needs bigger squares.
- How many Thanksgiving words are in play?
- The list holds 38 words, so a 5 by 5 card with a free center draws 24 of them. Cards differ from one another, and the call sheet lists all 38 in one shuffled order.
- Can a mixed-age family play together?
- Yes. Give the youngest a 3 by 3 card and the adults a 5 by 5 card, and call from one sheet. Smaller cards fill faster, so allow extra rounds for little players.
- Will the cards include sensitive history topics?
- The list sticks to food, season and gratitude words like feast, harvest and blessing. If you want different words, replace them through Your own words and the cards use your list.
