About this page
Printing helpStart with the solid rows and trace each t in one pass, then lift the pencil and cross it. Keep the session to a single page, around eight to twelve minutes. At home, ask the child to write their own name or a short word with a t after the last empty row, since the crossbar habit only shows up in real words. In class, this works well as a quiet five minute task after a spelling lesson.
Lowercase t is a short tall letter: it rises above the middle height but stays shorter than l. The crossbar comes last, after the whole word is written, and that delay is the tricky part. Children cross too early, or the bar floats off to one side. The capital T has its own shape that is not a copy of print. Before this page, practice i and u. Next comes th, and then words such as the and that.
Pick Large if the child cannot yet judge how tall the stem should be, because the rows show the height difference from the middle letters more clearly. Medium suits steady writers. Small helps older students tighten up. As a variation, write the same t three times and cross all three together at the end of the row.
- When do you cross a cursive t?
- Cross it after finishing the whole word, not right after the stem. That keeps the writing flowing. Cross low enough to touch the stem, and keep the bar short and level, roughly the width of the letter.
- How tall should a cursive t be compared with l?
- Shorter. The t reaches above the middle height but stops well below the top of an l. Seeing both on the same lined paper makes the difference easy to spot and copy.
- Why does my t look like a plus sign in the middle of words?
- The stem is probably too short, or the bar sits dead center. Aim for a stem that rises above the other small letters and a bar placed about two thirds of the way up.
