About this page
Printing helpShow the child that C is mostly a single sweeping curve, then let them trace the solid examples with a relaxed grip. Follow with dashed and dotted rows and finish on the blank lines. Seven or eight minutes is plenty because the shape is short. Say the stroke out loud while writing: start high, curve left, swing down and out. This is a good page for a morning when motivation is low.
C is the gentlest capital in the set: one curve, no tight turns, nothing to retrace. That makes it a practical way to build a smooth pencil path. Lowercase c adds a small point at the top and an exit stroke, which sets up the joins in words like cat and cup. Where kids slip is closing the curve until it looks like an o, or starting on the wrong side. It follows B and sets up D.
Pick Medium for most third graders and Large for a child who grips hard. Small is for steady writers who want practice at real size. Because the curve is open, a child can work quickly, so use Line size to adjust difficulty rather than adding more rows. Switch Style to Print to show c in print, which is nearly the same shape.
- Is cursive c the same as print c?
- Almost. The lowercase version is a curve with a small extra point and an exit stroke that joins to the next letter. The capital is rounder and often has a tiny loop at the top.
- Why does my child's c close up like an o?
- The pencil keeps going past the opening. Stop at the dashed end point and lift. Practicing on the dotted rows teaches where the curve should end.
- Is C easy enough to skip?
- Not really. The smooth curve is the base of a, d, g and q, so a steady c pays off across the set. It takes a few minutes and is worth doing.
