Letter T Handwriting Practice

T is one line down and one across the top, a cross with a long stem. This letter T page works for preschoolers, with tracing rows in three sizes, and it is among the best letters for teaching the idea that every line has a start and end.

Pull the stem down from the top, then lift and add the top bar from left to right. Say down, then across. Trace the Large row first, then try the Medium one. Ten minutes covers two rows and a pause. Tiger, top and tent are easy words afterward. A child can add a tail and stripes to a T to draw a tiger. The page is quick, so a second pass later the same day is easy.

T is a fine early letter because it has just two straight lines and no curves. The challenges are the left-to-right bar and the placement of the stem in the middle of it. Children sometimes put the stem at one end, which turns T into a flag or an L, or slant the bar. Lowercase t is shorter and has its crossbar about two thirds up the stick, which is a surprise for new writers.

Large rows suit a child who tends to put the bar too short. Show them that the stem sits at the middle. Medium is the next size once the bar stays level. If the lowercase t bar floats high, remind the child that it crosses the stem below the top. T and L together make a neat pair of corner and cross for comparison.

Which stroke of T comes first?
The stem, drawn from top to bottom, and then the bar across the top from left to right. This follows the general rule of top to bottom and left to right.
Why does my child's T tilt?
The bar is probably drawn without a guide. Point to the top line of the paper and ask them to follow along it, with the stem hanging from the middle.
How is lowercase t different from capital T?
Lowercase t is shorter than the capital, and its crossbar sits lower on the stem. Many children make both the same height and need a reminder.
