Set a timer for ten minutes and start with lowercase b, since it appears everywhere in words. Run a finger along the tall loop in the air first, up high then straight down. Trace the solid rows, then the dashed and dotted rows, and write the final row on the blank lines. Capital B can wait for the next session if hands tire. Check the stem is actually straight before praising.

B introduces a tall loop to a child's cursive vocabulary: the pencil rises to the top line, comes back down the same path and then rounds out into a bump. That bump has to end on the baseline, and the exit stroke carries the pencil toward the next letter. Children often make the loop short so b looks like h, or leave the bump unclosed. It follows a, and c comes next. Later, it helps with the loops in h, k and l.

Use Medium for a child on standard school ruling, and Large for anyone whose loops come out cramped. A short loop is the number one problem, so Large lines can fix it fast. Try Small only after the bump closes reliably. Switching Style to Print is useful for comparison: print b is a straight stick with a bowl, while cursive b is one flowing line.

Why does my child's cursive b look like an h?
Because the bump at the bottom is open. In b the curve closes back to the stem and ends at the baseline. In h the hump stays open. Trace the dashed rows slowly and watch where the line stops.
How tall should the loop of a lowercase b be?
Up to the top line, roughly double the height of a. Large line size makes the target easy to see. Short loops are the most common problem, not tall ones.
Can b and d be confused in cursive?
Less than in print. Cursive b loops up and ends with a bump on the right, while d starts with a round body on the left. The direction of travel is different, which helps the hand remember.
