About this page
Printing helpPoint out that lowercase g is an a that falls through the floor. Trace the body first, then the tail, using a finger over the solid model. After the solid rows, do dashed and dotted, and write the final row alone. Ten to fifteen minutes is the right length. Reading the sheet aloud, g is for gate and garden, helps the sound stay linked to the shape. Praise tails that reach as far down as the body is tall.
Capital G sweeps a wide curve and returns to the baseline, giving the hand a long steady motion. Lowercase g starts as an a, then drops a stem below the baseline and loops back to the left to join. Mistakes include a missing loop, a loop that turns the wrong way, and a body that does not close. G follows F and comes before H. It teaches the descender idea that j, p and q repeat.
Large lines give the tail extra space, so start there if the tail comes out short. Medium works for steady writers, and Small should wait until the loop is dependable. A Print comparison helps: the print g has a hook, while cursive g loops. Print another sheet later in the week rather than lengthening one sitting.
- Which way does the tail of cursive g loop?
- Down below the baseline, then curve left and back up to cross the stem. Younger writers sometimes loop the wrong way. Say 'down, left, up' while tracing the solid rows.
- Why does my child's g look like a q?
- The body closes properly, but the tail has no loop at the bottom. A g tail curves back left. A q tail in cursive turns right. Compare both side by side.
- Is capital G similar to lowercase g?
- No. The capital is a large sweeping curve that sits on the baseline, while lowercase g drops below it. Practice them separately even though they share the page.
