Letter G Handwriting Practice
G starts like a C and then picks up a little shelf, so it rewards children who already own the curve. Use this G tracing page with kindergartners and first graders, and with any child who still draws the letter as a backward 6.

About this page
Printing helpOpen with a quick C row from the previous page, then add G. Say: curve around like a C, then go in with a short bar. Trace the Large row with a finger, then the pencil. Keep the whole thing under ten minutes. Afterward, ask the child to find the G in the word goat and in the word big, where the lowercase looks different.
Capital G is a C with a horizontal bar, and the bar is where mistakes happen: it floats too high, runs outside the letter or gets drawn at a slope. Lowercase g is a very different animal, a small circle with a tail that drops below the baseline and curls back. It is one of the descenders, together with j, p, q and y, and younger children often forget the tail altogether.
Large is the best choice when the tail or bar needs room to be seen. If the child draws the bar too long, say it stops at the middle, like a tongue. Move to Medium after the shape has been correct for several rows in a row. Sit the child at a flat table; descenders need a bit of wrist freedom.
- Why does my child's G look like a 6?
- The curve is going the right way but the finishing bar is missing or tilted upward. Add a sticker at the stop point and practice the horizontal bar as a separate, short stroke.
- Do children need to learn lowercase g this early?
- Not necessarily. Capital G and lowercase g are rarely written at the same sitting before first grade. Introduce the lowercase when the child starts writing words like dog or big.
- Is G harder than C?
- A little, because G adds a second stroke after the curve. A child who draws C smoothly generally picks up G within a day or two of short, relaxed practice.
