Kindness Word Search

Kindness weeks and morning meetings are the natural slot. Hand out the puzzle, and when someone finds SHARE or HELP, ask for one time they did that this week. Easy takes about five minutes, and larger boards are better for a longer calm-down time. Pairing children to solve together turns it into practice at taking turns. Print the answer key if a helper is checking, and use the 5 versions switch to hand a different board to each table.

These words describe behavior children are asked to show daily. The easy list is made of short, familiar terms (CARE, GIVE, NICE), and the harder list reaches EMPATHY, RESPECT, PATIENCE and HARMONY, which are abstract ideas many children can read before they can explain. Searching for them gives a natural point to define each one. Where children slip is confusing KIND with KINDLY or KINDNESS, so they read to the last letter.

Pick Easy for kindergarten through second grade, Medium for third and fourth, and Hard for older students who can handle backwards words. If you run a classroom kindness challenge, use My own words to enter up to 30 words, perhaps your students' names or the virtues you are practicing. Then post the finished sheets on a wall.

Can this be part of a kindness week?

Yes. Use it as a morning task, then discuss two or three of the words found. Asking for an example of SHARE or HELP turns a puzzle into a short, concrete talk about behavior.

How can I connect the puzzle to feelings?

After solving, have children sort the words into feelings (GLAD, HAPPY) and actions (GIVE, HELP). The short sorting step takes two minutes and builds vocabulary for talking about emotions.

Does the hardest board get too frustrating?

It can for younger children. Hard uses a 20x20 grid with backwards words, so keep it for fluent readers. A struggling solver does better on Easy, where words run only across and down.
