Words like NURSE, PULSE, SHOTS and BANDAGE give children names for things they see at a clinic, which can make a visit feel less strange. Easy words such as FLU, EAR and ILL are short and common. Medium brings CHART, WOUND and BLOOD. Hard adds longer terms like SYMPTOM, SURGERY and VITAMIN, which many children cannot spell yet. Parents can use the word hunt to talk about what each thing is for, and children often ask useful questions as they search.

Preschool and kindergarten children do fine on Easy with a parent reading the words. Grades 2 and 3 can handle Medium. Hard suits health classes or older children who enjoy long words on a 20x20 board. If a child feels anxious about a visit, start with Easy so it feels like a win, and keep the answer key out of sight unless it is needed.

Which level works in a doctor's waiting room?
