Printing help

Make it the first thing out of the folder on a snow day, or give it to a class returning from recess with cold hands. Allow around fifteen minutes. Children can sit by a window and solve with hot cocoa. A teacher can choose to turn it into a vocabulary lesson by asking which answers describe weather and which describe clothing. Mark with the answer key and keep the sheets for the January bulletin board.

Winter vocabulary is a natural fit for spelling work. Short words like ICE, HAT and COLD give a quick start. Weather terms such as BLIZZARD, FLURRY and SNOWSTORM are longer and have double letters and consonant clusters, which often cause errors. Compounds like SNOWBALL, SNOWSUIT and FIREPLACE show children how two words join. If a child gets stuck, ask them to spot a small word hidden inside, such as SNOW or FIRE.

Kindergarten to grade two: use first-letter hints. Grades three to five: the bank is sufficient. Adults who like a quick brain teaser can switch hints off. For a unit on clothing or arctic life, type your own words like PARKA, IGLOO or PENGUIN into Your own words and make the sheet match the lesson.

Is this sheet suitable for a snow day packet?
Yes. It needs only a pencil, and the 5 versions option makes a set for siblings or a small group. Include the answer key page so parents can check.
What are the hardest winter words?
BLIZZARD, SNOWSTORM and FIREPLACE take the longest. Suggest finding the small words inside them, like SNOW and FIRE, before arranging the rest of the letters, and keep the first-letter hint on.
Can I limit the sheet to cold-weather clothing?
Yes. Enter HAT, COAT, MITT, BOOT, SCARF and GLOVES in Your own words. The page then scrambles only the entries you provide, and the answer key lists the same short set.
