Printing help

Run it during a garden unit or beside a farmers' market visit, and ask children to circle the vegetables they have eaten. It takes about fifteen minutes, since many words are long. Splitting the sheet in half works for younger children. Use the answer key afterward to check spelling, then talk about which vegetables could go into one meal. Hand every table the 5 versions so neighbors work from different orders.

Vegetable names run from three letters to eleven, and many of them break spelling rules: leek, celery, zucchini and broccoli have doubled letters or silent patterns. Children who read well can still stall on cauliflower because the letter groups AU and OW are not obvious. Short words such as pea, yam, soy and leek make a good first pass. Matching the vegetable to a taste or picture helps memory, and solving can lead naturally into a short writing prompt.

Bank + first letter is the best match for grade two, since the list is hard. Word bank only suits grades three to five. None is hard enough for sixth grade and up. Under Your own words, type the produce from your school garden, a class recipe or this week's spelling list. If the sheet feels too long, use the first half and save the rest for another day.

Are the long words like cauliflower too hard for kids?
They are the stretch words. With the bank on, a third grader can match letters to cauliflower or watercress one by one, and finishing a long word often feels like the best part of the sheet.
How do I stop kids guessing instead of spelling?
Ask them to write every letter, then read the word aloud and check it against the bank. Counting letters in the scramble and in the answer helps catch mistakes such as a missing double letter.
Can this work for a cooking club?
Yes. Replace the list through Your own words with the ingredients in the recipe, then solve them together before cooking. It makes ingredient names familiar before anyone touches the stove.
