About this page

Printing help

Pair it with a library book or a documentary on sea life and hand it out afterward as a quick check. It takes ten to twenty minutes depending on hints. In a classroom, split children into reef, deep sea and shoreline teams and give each team a highlighter to mark the words that fit their zone. At home, the answer key lets a parent check at a glance. The sheet also works as a wet-weather activity on a beach trip.

Besides spelling, the list gives children names of real animals and places: OCTOPUS, SEAHORSE, ANEMONE and PLANKTON. Many are hard to decode because they have unusual clusters (URCHIN, ANEMONE, JELLYFISH). Smaller words such as RAY, FIN and SEA make the first lines easy. Children often drop a letter in OCTOPUS or SUBMARINE, so tell them to count the letters in the bank word. Afterward, ask which words name animals and which name things people use.

Use first-letter hints for first and second grade. The bank is plenty for grade three. For students studying marine biology, set None and add your own terms, like PLANKTON or SALINITY, into Your own words. Remember the limit is 14 letters per entry, so long terms still fit comfortably and the sheet will match your lesson.

Why does the ocean list have 29 words instead of thirty?
The list holds 29 theme words, so the page prints 29 lines. If you want a round number, add your own words and the page will use up to thirty of them.
Can I use it for a marine biology lesson?
Yes. Enter terms from your unit in Your own words, up to thirty entries, and turn hints off for older students. Use the key to check spelling before the next lesson.
Which ocean words trip children up most?
ANEMONE, URCHIN and JELLYFISH are the usual troublemakers, because the letter groups feel unfamiliar to children. Turn on the first-letter hint and have them sound out the word in two halves before writing.
