Short U Worksheets

Use this page when short u is the focus. A full page takes about fifteen minutes for most children. Say the first word together, write the missing u. Use the answer key to check, and print 5 versions so neighbors have different orders. Afterward, ask the child to find the u in each word and read the list aloud. Keep the finished sheet in a folder and read it aloud again later in the week.

Five endings, ug, un, ut, ub and um, supply 28 words, and many of them are words children already say daily: sun, bug, hug. The sound is easy to hear but the letter is easy to confuse with v, since u and v look alike. Know consonants first. Every blank takes a u. If the child writes v, trace a rounded u with a curve at the bottom. Sun, bug and hug make a good warm-up before the harder words. How many short u words are there?

There are 28 across five endings: ug, un, ut, ub and um. Each page draws only some of them, so a child can print several sheets and still meet fresh combinations of familiar words alongside a few repeats.

Why does my child confuse u and v?

Both letters are open at the top, and v is pointed while u is curved. Trace a large u with a rounded bottom and say the sound. Practice on a whiteboard helps before using the sheet.
