Short E Worksheets

Short e is often the hardest short vowel to hear, so sit alongside the child and say each word slowly. A full page can be split over two days. Each word has a gap where the e goes: fill it in, then sound the word out. Use the answer key afterward, or print 5 versions for a group. Reading the finished list out loud, a word at a time, is a good closing task.

Four endings feed this page: et, en, ed and eg, giving 24 words in total. That is a smaller pool than short a, so pages repeat sooner, which is useful for review. The main trouble is that short e sounds close to short i, so pen and pin get confused. Know consonant sounds first. Is this harder than the short a page?

Often a little, because the vowel is harder to hear and the pool of words is smaller. Spend more time saying each word aloud. If your child struggles, drop to one ending with the Word family mode.
